Facebook offers a wide selection of privacy settings, many of which are scattered throughout your account settings. Here are some of the top privacy concerns Facebook users need to address to keep their profiles private.

Our instructions include direct links to certain account settings, which you can access through your web browser – you must be logged into Facebook for precise instructions.

How do I control my privacy on Facebook?

Go to the Facebook settings pageNavigate to the General tab by clicking the down arrow iconin the upper right corner of any Facebook page and select “Settings”www.facebook.com/settings.

Then select “Settings”

General tab

General account settings include basic account information such as your name, username, birthday settings, and identity confirmation information.

Name:Instead of your full name, use initials or nicknames if possible.

Account name:It’s part of your public profile and can be a way to find you on Facebook. Use something unique and avoid using the same username you used before.

Contact:Use a dedicated email address for your Facebook account. This reduces your visibility if your Facebook or email address is hacked.

Memorial Settings:You can choose a former contact who can manage your account after your death. They can’t view messages or post as friends until your account is registered. You can also request the permanent deletion of your account after your death.

Confirm your identity:Identity confirmation helps in the account recovery process to ensure that the account you are trying to access belongs to you.

Security tab

The security tab, located in the left column of the settings page, is your first line of defense in terms of account access control and hack prevention.

Check your important privacy settings:See the Facebook ofto encourageSteps forprotect your account.

Where you are logged in:Review the locations (mobile and desktop) where it says you’re currently logged into Facebook. Immediately remove any old or unknown locations or devices.

Change Password:Make sure you have a unique password for Facebookand it changes often.

to safeguardYour login details:Investigate all registered devices and remove any unknown browsers or applications immediately.

Use two-factor authentication:Two-factor authenticationrequires a login code if connecting through an unrecognized device and is used to secure your accountto count.

AuthorizedLogin:Review the devices on which you won’t have to use two-factor authentication. These must be trusted devices that are protected.

Privacy tab

The privacy tab, located in the left column of the settings page, adjusts your default sharing, search, and contact settings.

Who can see my stuff?

  • Upcoming Posts: Friends
  • Activity Log: Review all your actions and adjust visibility if needed.
  • Limit Past Messages: Make old messages visible only to your friends.

Who can send me a friend request?Select “Everyone” or “Friends of Friends”. You must approve all friend requests before they are allowed to view your full profile.

Who can find me?

  • Use your email: Friends
  • Use your phone number: Friends
  • Do not allow search engines to link to your Facebook account.

Profile tab and markup

The Profile & Tagging tab, located in the left column of the settings page, lets you control what appears on your Facebook timeline.

Who can add to my timeline:Enable “Review posts where your friends tag you before they appear on your timeline?” to give you control over what you are tagged in.

Who can see my timeline:Only allow your friends to see what you or your friends (if you allow them) post to your timeline. Use “View as” mode to see how others view your profile.

Card rating:Enable tag review to ensure your tags are correct and prevent spammers from being able to use your posts to tag others and gain attention, often for spam or lead generation.

Map hint:Disable tagging suggestions to prevent Facebook from suggesting you tag unknown content.

Block Tab

Prevent users and apps from performing certain actions with the Block setting.

Shortlist:Use “Restricted List” if you have people on your friends list that you only want to share public items with.

User Key:Block users from contacting you or viewing your private or public profile. The blocking is mutual and anonymous. Blocked users aren’t notified, and you can’t see other people’s profiles. Block users on this settings page or by clicking “…” in the lower right corner of their cover photo and selecting “block”.

Block apps:Ban app/game invites from your friends.

Block sites:Similar to blocking users, you can block a Page so that the public can no longer interact with your posts.

Go to Edit Profile

The Edit your profile tab is on the home page. This information is displayed in the About Me section of your profile.

Your “About You” section contains a lot of personal information, including your education, hometown, and job. Many of them can give hackers clues about common security issues, like your hometown or your high school mascot. Set the audience for all information in this section to “Friends”.

Work and Education:Reserved for friends only.

Places where you have lived:Reserved only for friends.

Contact and basic information:Date of birth can only be set for friends; all others should be ignored or set only to me

Friends and relations:Leave this field blank, as these relationships can reveal a lot of personal information, such as your mother’s maiden name.

Details about you:Reserved only for friends.

Life event:Review life events using this tab. Click on a specific event to adjust privacy. Use the down arrow icon to view edits and object changes in the lower right corner.

Check your settings

Once you’re done, visit your Facebook page to see how your settings appear.

See how your profile is visible to others. Go to your profile, click on “…” at the bottom right of the cover photo and select “View as”.
