What are the components of emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence is a set of skills and behaviors. While some people will be more proficient in certain aspects, EI can be learned, developed and improved.

The four main components of EI are self-perception, self-regulation, social awareness, and social skills:

Self-awareness

Self-awareness is the ability to identify and understand your own emotions and the impact we have on others. It is the foundation of emotional intelligence, and other components of EI depend on this self-perception.

“It all starts with self-perception, which is the foundation of EI, and it builds from there. If you become aware of your own emotions and the behaviors they trigger, you can begin to manage those emotions. and these behaviors,” says Andrews.

Our emotions influence our mood, our behavior, our performance and our interactions with others. “We all have emotions all the time, the question is whether you are aware of those emotions and how they impact your behavior – and the behavior of others,” says Andrews.

According to Tasha Eurich, organizational psychologist, researcher and author ofOverviewSelf-aware people tend to be more confident and creative. They also make better decisions, build stronger relationships, and communicate more effectively.

Self-regulation

“Those with strong self-regulation skills are able to pause and breathe deeply in stressful and stressful situations,” Andrews explains, “which helps them calm down and think before they speak or act. ”

To improve your emotional intelligence, you have to start at the beginning, with self-awareness. However, assessing your innate self-awareness is difficult because, as Andrews says, “you don’t know what you don’t know.”

Research reveals barriers to self-perception

Without an objective sense of who you are and what motivates you, it’s nearly impossible to become emotionally intelligent. Andrews cites a study by Tasha Eurich which found that 95% of participants rated themselves as having a high self-perception.

Using more empirical measures of self-awareness, however, research shows that only 10-15% of the cohort are actually self-aware.

That’s a pretty big discrepancy, and one that shows most of us aren’t very embarrassed. Worse, research also shows that managers and CEOs are perhaps the least self-aware. This is not in defiance of their authority, but most likely because of it.

Eurich wrote inharvard business reviewthat the more power someone has, the more likely they are to be overconfident about their level of self-knowledge. After all, those at the top of the chain have fewer people responding to them.

Usually, when managers receive feedback from employees, it is not so honest because subordinates are afraid of incurring negative consequences. Managers are immune to criticism and as a result, self-perception plummets.

Receiving honest and constructive feedback is essential to becoming self-aware. Andrews notes that a 360-degree emotional intelligence assessment can be a very effective way to gain insight into the components of your EI and your impact on others.

1. Recognize your emotions and name them

What are your feelings right now? Can you name them? In a stressful situation, what emotions often arise? How would you like to react in these situations? Can you stop to take a break and review your comments? Taking a moment to name your emotions and regulate your responses is an essential step towards EI.

2. Ask for feedback

Test your self-perception by asking your manager, colleagues, friends or family how they rate your emotional intelligence. For example, ask them how you react to difficult situations, how adaptable or empathetic you are, and/or how you handle conflict. It might not always be what you want to hear, but it’s often what you need to hear.

3. Reading text

Studies show that reading literature with complex characters canimprove empathy. Reading stories from other people’s perspective helps us better understand their thoughts, motivations, and actions, and can help increase your social awareness.

Empathize. Seeing things from someone else’s perspective will help you understand their values and beliefs. This is important when it comes to motivating and engaging others. Make a conscious effort to get to know your colleagues.

Ask open questions and actively listen to what they have to say rather than simply waiting for your turn to speak. Be on the lookout for body language and other nonverbal signs as these may tell you more than someone is willing to express out loud.

Own your emotions. Part of being emotionally intelligent is about taking responsibility for the way you act around others.

If someone upsets you, pause and reflect on why their actions led you to feel this way instead of reacting impulsively. Recognize that a conversation is a two-way interaction and it takes two people to make you angry, sad or frustrated.

Go with your gut. Finally, listen to your body. If your stomach starts doing backflips every time you speak to a senior manager, or your muscles tense up before you go into a meeting, what does this tell you?

Counterintuitive as it might seem, emotions can be a valuable source of information when making rational decisions at work. Remember, emotional intelligence isn’t about suppressing emotions. It’s about learning how to recognize, process and channel them in a way that benefits you and your team.

Enhancing your emotional intelligence requires effort but it can be achieved with sustained practice.
