Multi-read content what to bring to a tailor

Whether you need a review on a cheap outerwear or just go online to buy your rental tuxedo, learn how to get results from a tailor.

PERFECT FIT OF STARS IN THE RIGHT SIZE.YOUR RESEARCH

The stereotypical tailor – the one you’re probably imagining right now – doesn’t talk much, doesn’t ask for much, and never smiles. Receiving a simple beating can seem intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. Use this cheat phrase board and match your new second language.

Adjust do’s and don’ts

There are limits to what a tailor can do. Unless the item of clothing in question has sentimental value, it’s usually better to buy a brand new item of clothing, the one that initially fits you better, than to change it too much. The cost of a major adjustment can add up quickly, and the adjustment may still be far more than desirable.

Do not prune
Don’t take your costume for these changes
→ Shoulder jacket
→ Chest Jacket
→ Jacket body length

At the tailor
If the garment seems to fit your size but something is a little different, have it custom made
→ Jacket sleeve length
→ Pant Leg Length Hem
→ Jacket size
→ Waist circumference
→ Trouser cone

To start
Say, “Who’s your tailor?”

You probably know someone who always looks like a model superhero in their costume, and it’s safe to assume they’re not just lucky with the right cut. Ask them who they use to make their clothes, and unless they’re selfish and eccentric, they’ll probably be happy to share their secrets.

Where to useYelp. Find a 4-5 star store in your area and browse photos of their work. This may not be proper advice and more of a rule of thumb, but keep the total number of reviews in mind when looking at the ratings. Four 5-star reviews < 50 4.5-star reviews.

To note:We use the title tailor loosely here. If you just need simple changes like a jacket sleeve or trouser hem, an on-site dry cleaner will do the trick.

Set expectations
Say, “I brought a picture.”

Instead of explaining too much or risking misinformation, use a photo to get on the same page as the tailor. Save a photo to your phone or rip a page from your favorite magazine to reveal the perfect costume that’s right for you.

Adjust pant leg length
Say: “My pants are too short/long. I want the lacing adjusted so that there is a slight break in the top of the shoe. “

Important Terms
Break: The small crease in the leg fabric where the bottom of the pant leg rests on your shoe.
Hem: The edge of the piece of fabric is sewn (or necessary) so that it does not come off.

Leg length is a personal choice, but we recommend cutting a small amount in the upper part of the shoe for a sleek, modern look. The tailor will likely fold the lower leg fabric, pin it, and may ask you if the length is correct. If so, refer to your photo, and if you need to look at it, look at it in the mirror and not in your shoes. And don’t worry if they just pin or mark a pin.

Jacket sleeve length adjustment
Say, “My coat sleeves are too long. I want the sleeves of my jacket to come up to reveal half an inch of cuffs.

Important Terms
Go up: Reduce the length of the garment.
Take off: Increase the length of the garment.

A half inch of exposed shirt cuffs below the jacket sleeves is perfect for an overall look – both modern and traditional. And when you try to find such a specific coat sleeve length, you’ll be surprised at the difference a shirt dress can make. So bring or wear your shirt dress to the tailor, and the same when you pick it up so you can check the fit before you leave. No t-shirts, my friends.

If your jacket sleeves are too short, ask your tailor to “pull down” the sleeves to reveal half of the shirt cuffs.

If your tailor gets pushy
Say, “I understand, but…”

Think about the model maker you imagined earlier. Many tailors are from a different generation. They learned and evolved their craft in a different era, and they may not match the modern relevance you’re looking for. That’s okay – they may have great ideas about making classics, and they may even shut you out of an ambitious runway show, even if it’s inappropriate.

The first part is to listen to the tailor’s advice – or if they’re the quiet type, ask for it. The second part is to talk and clarify your match goals with the tailor. Some tailors can be pushy, old-fashioned, so stick with it. Don’t be intimidated by an outdated fit.

Sew a rental costume
Say, “Please don’t cut the fabric.”

You deserve a suit that fits, whether it’s the one you own or the one you rent. But we don’t want you wasting time logging in to wear our rental costumes. To adjust the length of the jacket sleeves and trouser leg, you can visit your local tailor (or dry cleaner) for a quick and accurate hemming. Just ask them not to cut the fabric.

If your jacket or pants don’t fit perfectly and length isn’t the issue (think waist or jacket shoulder/chest), we’ll send you the right size right away—free.

You want your clothes to fit better, but the thought of going to the tailor is intimidating, and you don’t know where to start. This video outlines the exact 5 step process I use to find a tailor, test them out and nurture a long-term relationship.

Fit is the most important aspect of style. If you don’t believe this, look at the old photos of me in this post. You can see how I used to dress before I understood the importance of fit.

Wearing clothes that fit will literally make you look taller, thinner and even more athletic. But if you wear clothes that fit poorly, you will look shorter, fatter and less competent that you really are. At the end of the day, the best way to make sure your clothes fit is to get them tailored.

I’m talking about good old fashioned clothing alterations. Because the reality is, clothes are mass manufactured to fit the average male, who happens to be 5’9″ and slightly overweight. If you’re already getting your clothes tailored, good for you! You’ve taken the most important step toward dressing well everyday.

If you’ve never been to the tailor, it’s okay. I understand. Going to the tailor for the first time can be intimidating. You’re probably wondering: How do I find a good clothing tailor? What do I tell them? Do I have to know my measurements? What if they mess up my clothes? Is it going to be expensive? What if I waste my money?

These are all legitimate concerns, but I promise you have nothing to be worried about. I’m going to teach you how to find a tailor, how to “test” them out and how to build a lasting relationship.

#suits #tailoring #notsponsored

Top seven tips to know when having a suit tailored for the very first time:

Number one, be aware. Before you even consider getting a garment tailored, you need to know that even the most experienced tailors won’t be able to fix all issues you might have with a garment. Go on with reasonable expectations and know what they can achieve.

Number two, start by choosing a tailor that’s got deep experience in menswear. Your average alterations tailor will be able to shorten the trousers at the hem but lengthening a sleeve from the sleeve head will require a more advanced skill set.

Number three, come prepared. Make sure you check your tailor’s reviews that you plan on visiting. Also, take some time, talk to your colleagues, talk to friends, family members, and see where they might be able to recommend that you get your suits tailored, see what tailors they trust.

Number four, have a vision for your finished suit. It’s extremely helpful for you when you go to the tailor to have an idea in your mind what you want the finished suit to actually look like. Make sure you take a moment to speak with your tailor beforehand and see if what you’re envisioning is something that they are able to produce.

Number 5, bring your own shoes and shirt. One of the easiest things to do to avoid a possible realteration is to remember to bring your own shoes, specifically, dress shoes. Nothing too casual, something you probably plan on wearing with the suit and also a well fitting dress shirt. Why? Well, for two reasons, one, you’re going to eliminate a lot of extra guesswork on your tailor’s part and two, you won’t have to go to the tailor multiple times when you bring and wear a proper fitting dress shirt in for your fitting.

Number six, once your suit is pinned, test it out. Now, there could be a few different ways that your tailor might be marking your suit. One could be through pens and another might be through chalk. Now for example, if you like your things to fit very slim and you’ve got the pins and it could be a little tough to see if you can sit down comfortably but you can at least see if you are able to move and maneuver properly. If your tailor has marked your seat with chalk, there’s really no need to try to test out the fit at that point as the fit of the garment really hasn’t changed at that point. Make sure you can stick at least two fingers into your suit trouser’s waistband and see if you would like the finished fit once everything is complete.

Number seven, don’t be afraid to ask questions and make sure you take your tailors advice with a grain of salt. I have often seen men come in to the tailor to have a suit tailored for the very first time or perhaps, it’s their 80th time and sometimes, they just get a little bit nervous about the questions they want to ask their tailor. This is why it’s very important to make sure you write down the questions that you would like to ask your tailor so that you don’t forget and you can make sure that you get everything covered when you do leave.
